I had the chance to see Sparkle this week and I was in swooning over the fashions! My favorite cast member was Tika Sumpter. She is such a doll! The new “Sparkle” improves on its source material: screenwriter Mara Brock Akil keeps the plot the same but gives the characters some pizzaz. Akil gave enough depth and background to explain their actions; and director Salim Akil (the witty “Jumping the Broom”) and his crew give the movie visual flair while letting the songs propel the story forward. Some people compares Sparkle to Dream Girls and there are not many overlaps as many people may think. When Whitney Houston sang I had to grab my tissues because honey I was in tears! Whitney’s acting is spot-on, from her tough-love for her children to her distrust of “worldly people.”

Whitney Houston had on a leopard poncho and a purple cape like no one since the fab Elizabeth Taylor.B. Michael designed that for the fashion gawds!

I was swooning over the shift dresses and capes! I am already searching vintage stores for this season! My favorite singer, Kem had a few appearances and I just love him… That is all! Mike Epps was too funny but the sad part is that what he did as a job in the movie, many actors are doing the same thing and not realizing it. I give Sparkle a 3.5 hearts out of 4.
