On Saturday August 4, 2012, The Atlanta Dream (WNBA) conducted its first annual iDream Leadership Summit, teens (young women and men) ranging from the ages 12-17 filled Spelman College’s Cosby Auditorium.
The Summit speakers included Atlanta Dream players Tiffany Hayes, Laurie Koehn, Armintie Price, and Ketia Swanier. Reality television personalities Evelyn Braxton “Ms.E”, Towanda Braxton, Evelyn Braxton, Trina Braxton and Toya Wright.
During the discussion the panel covered four major topics Leadership, Professionalism, Education and Personal Challenges. It was a well-planned, transparent, and inspirational summit. I felt like I was at church when Ms. E got to speaking…They all moved my spirit (throwing my hand up like Trina!). Many people don’t know that Trina Braxton is a college graduate! She finished last year!
Toya shared how she struggled but obtained her high school diploma.
The teens were able to participate in a Q&A session with the speakers. Don’t judge me but I jumped up and asked a question too! Did you know that the in order to play in the WNBA you have to complete college (unlike the NBA…so sexist)?
After lunch the teens had the chance to participate in breakout sessions that focused on three specific topics under the panel discussion:
1) Finding the Right Balance: School, Activities and more!
2) Fighting the Pressure: How to handle peer pressure and bullying
3) Learning How to Lead: Understanding the role of a Leader
Each attendee received an iDream Leadership Packet, an iDream t-shirt, and a ticket to the Atlanta Dream ‘s first home game of the season game against the Chicago Sky at Philips Arena on August 22, 2012. See more pictures after the heartbeat.
Thanks to my friends over at Atlanta Dream for the invite! Love you! I wish you would come to my school and make this a mobile summit!
