Retired Dr. Paul Butler, recently made headlines for his controversial remarks at a school board meeting in Dover, New Hampshire. Mr. Butler, who is a former football player himself, recently made a proposal that calls for a ban on high school football. This didn’t go over to well with the people of Dover, New Hampshire. Dr. Paul Butler spoke candidly to Good Morning America about his decision to call for a ban on high school football. He says, “”We have a moral imperative to at least begin the process of ending this game.” He goes on to say, “”The literature is clear. This is a dangerous game for children to be playing.”
Even though Dr. Paul Butler’s idea of ending football is a little out there, there is some truth to what he is saying. According to ESPN and various doctors, taking a big hit to the head during a football game is the equivalent of taking a sledge hammer to the head. In recently years, the NFL was sued by 2000 former football players for alleged downplaying and hiding evidence of the risk of brain injury. The NFL also enforced a rule that states that if a player’s helmet pops off during a play, he must immediately be taken off the field until the play is finished.
